Over the centuries, on Krapanj there has been a tradition of sponge diving, and the Adriatic sponge is highly valued for its quality and beauty.
Sponge diving appears on the island of Krapanj more than 300 years ago when the inhabitants of Krapanj were introduced to that work by Fra Antun Grk from Crete. He also brought knowledge about sponge processing to the island around 1704. Sponges were caught with spears/tridents from the boat, and later the divers were doing this.
There are 5 000 kinds of sea sponges, and unlike the industrial sponge, the "spuga" harvested by the inhabitants of Krapanj is super-ecological and therefore it is more and more sought after.
