Spring in Šibenik.

  10.05.2023, 12:45h

Šibenik, a Mediterranean city with a rich history, was mentioned for the first time on Christmas Day in 1066, in the grant of Peter Krešimir IV. The city of Krešimir, as it is affectionately called, reveals historical stories that are written through the city streets, fortresses and monuments.

The old part of the city abounds with important monuments, and Šibenik is one of the five world cities that has two UNESCO monuments, and thus it is'' located'' next to London, Berlin, Beijing and New Delhi. St. James Catehdral was included in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage in 2000 and is the most significant monument in the old city center.

When walking around Šibenik, all the locals would recommend visiting the three land fortresses – St. Michael, St.  John and Barone fortreses are ideal locations for a panoramic view of the entire city and photos that you will show to your loved ones.

Šibenik reveals historical stories that are written through the city's streets, fortresses and monuments, and spring is the ideal time to embark on a new adventure and explore the city and its surroundings. There are plenty of activities for all those who want to make the most of their vacation, and longer days, plenty of sun and increasing temperatures are the best invitation to discover this little paradise.

Channel of St. Anthony protects Šibenik from big waves and the open sea. This channel, with St Nicholas' Fortress, forms a unique "sea gate" at the entrance to Šibenik. If you are a lover of nature, the smell of the sea and pine trees, you should cycle or run surrounded by wonderful nature in the Channel of St. Anthony or on the promenade.

Channel of St. Anthony is about 2.5 kilometers long, and is characterized by forests of aleppo pine and holm oak. A promenade stretches along the channel that connects the area from Paninkovac bay to the islet of Školjić in front of the St Nicholas' Fortress. It takes about two hours to tour the promenade in one direction, and it is a favorite destination for both, locals and tourists.

At Jadrija, the hundred-year-old city bathing area, surfers have also found their place under the sun, at the Mali Viganj surfing school. This is a great opportunity for all those who are addicted to adrenaline or would like to try something new.

The surroundings of Šibenik are really the most special in spring, when the almonds bloom and "follow" you in your footsteps. Every nature lover and an active vacation simply has to stop at Krka National Park. Wooded and rugged, the Krka River is the most valuable ornithological area in Europe and home to numerous endemic animal species, and with every new step you will discover something new. From the magnificent Skradinski buk, you can go on a boat trip to the islet of Visovac or to Roški waterfall or Torak lake. Since 1445, Visovac has been home to the Franciscan monastery of the Mother of Mercy and the Church of Our Lady of Visovac, and in the surroundings of Visovac lake, you can truly nourish both soul and body.

At the foot of the Svilaja mountain and through Petrovo polje, the Čikola river stretches, and it is particularly attractive because of its canyon and zipline with, we believe, the greenest view. Tens of meters above the ground, you rush at a speed of 70 kilometers per hour and enjoy the view of the Čikola river canyon on the 1.4 kilometer long road. Accompanied by experienced guides and with a lot of positive energy, fun is guaranteed as well as a special experience that you will talk about for years.

Take your bike out of the garage and set off on one of the county's many cycling routes. On the Bike & Hike page you will find routes on all types of surfaces and for all types of riding. Regardless of whether you are a professional cyclist or a recreational person, the area of Šibenik and its surroundings is ideal for riding on two wheels. Pedaling and enjoying beautiful trails, landscapes and nature is an adventure you do not want to miss.

The Šibenik archipelago tells a special story, and every local will recommend a trip to islands such as Žirje, Kaprije, Krapanj, Zlarin, Prvić or Kornati. The island of Krapanj is the lowest and smallest inhabited island on the Adriatic, and it nurtures a centuries-old tradition of diving, sponge-growing and fishing. Zlarin, better known as the island of coral, is a real jewel of the Šibenik archipelago. You can explore it by kayak or bike&hike paths. On Prvić, you will find a fantastic memorial center dedicated to the widely known Šibenik giant and inventor, Faust Vrančić. A stone labyrinth of eighty-nine islands, islets and cliffs in the sea - just a small part of what Kornati National Park has to offer, which you must visit if you are a lover of wild nature.

The smell of the sea, the rays of the sun on your face and numerous activities that the city and its surroundings can offer you, are the best invitation to spring in Šibenik.
