Sveti Nikola Tavelić is a descendant of the old Croatian noble Tavelić family. He entered the Franciscan Order in Bribir, the city of the famous Šubić dukes.

In 1365 he became a priest, subsequently he became a missionary and went to Bosnia where he spent 12 years. After that he entered the mission in Palestine, where he was tortured and killed. He was canonised by Pope Paul VI in Rome in 1970.
