St. John's Fortress is the largest and highest fortress in Šibenik. It was constructed in 1646 on a hill that stands 120 meters high above the old town of Šibenik.
The fortress takes its name from a small church that had stood there for several centuries. Alongside the Barone Fortress, it was built in just 58 days as the central point of the new city defense system, right before the major assault by the Ottoman army. This star-shaped structure is also famous as a captivating filming location for the popular series Game of Thrones.
St. John's Fortress underwent renovation and was opened to the public in the summer of 2022. One of its main content is the educational campus, discreetly nestled beneath the fortress's "pliers." The campus includes interactive classrooms, bedrooms and conference rooms. It caters specifically to organized groups of students, young professionals, and artists who visit Šibenik as part of study trips, field courses, exchanges, and other specialized cultural and artistic programs and educational initiatives in the realm of cultural and creative industries.
